Celebrities in advertising has surged in recent years, reaching an all-time high in Q1 2026. This growth is being driven by major tentpole sporting events, which are increasing demand for athlete star power.
In the latest installment of our State of Pay report, XR analyzes payment data from hundreds of ad campaigns to uncover what’s fueling this growth in celebrity-driven advertising and where the industry is headed next.
Celebrity Pay Hits Record Pace in Q1 2026
In Q1 2026, celebrity guarantee spending reached an estimated $348.6M, the highest Q1 on record since XR began tracking, and 25% above the same period last year.

Football Legends Will Win the Summer
60%
World Cup-themed ads feature football legends
With the FIFA World Cup in North America this summer, celebrity and athlete spending is set to rise again.
The FIFA tournament will air and stream live during viewer-friendly times for U.S. audiences, creating a major opportunity for brands to engage both existing football fans and new ones.
Already, more than 60% of World Cup-themed ads, from Lay’s, Dove, Adidas, AB Inbev, and others, feature football (soccer) legends and celebrities, including David Beckham, Thierry Henry, Alexia Putellas, and Lionel Messi, paired with well-known American actors.
Celebrity Ad Campaigns Go the Distance
XR analysis of ad campaigns from 2020 to Q1 2026 reveals how brands and agencies maximize their celebrity investments.
Ads featuring celebrities kept talent rights active more than 65 days longer on average than those with scale actors, keeping creative running significantly longer.
XR found talent renewal lengths grew sharply from 2021 onward as celebrity-led campaigns surged following the pandemic and Hollywood strikes, outpacing campaigns featuring non-celebrity talent.
